Senior Lecturer, the Department of Artificial Intelligence, Faculty of ICT, University of Malta

Dr. Vanessa Camilleri is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Artificial Intelligence, Faculty of ICT, University of Malta. She spent a number of years working on research that focused on the intersection of emerging technologies and education, particularly exploring Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) applications for behavioural change and empathy development. Her current research interests are bridging the domains of AI in sport and AI ethics, with a strong commitment to human-centred design and responsible innovation. As Principal Investigator of SWIM-360 and DIVE, she leads pioneering work in multimodal explainable AI and intelligent video analysis to support swimmer performance, biomechanics research, and data-driven coaching.

Dr. Camilleri is equally recognised for her thought leadership in AI ethics, advocating for the transparent, equitable, and meaningful integration of emerging technologies into society. She is particularly interested in how AI systems shape human behaviour, decision-making, and wellbeing. Her projects have explored the ethical implications of Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) in behavioural interventions, including the use of immersive technology to foster empathy and understanding in fields such as mental health and education.

She is deeply committed to democratising AI education, having co-edited a practical guide that teaches AI concepts through traditional games and leading national outreach efforts to make AI more accessible. As Chair of the Faculty of ICT Committee for Outreach, she works to bridge the gap between advanced technology and public understanding, with a particular focus on engaging young people in responsible AI.

Dr. Camilleri holds a PhD from Coventry University, where she studied virtual worlds in teacher education. She continues to be an active contributor to national and international discourse on AI in sport, ethics, and education, working across disciplines to shape a more inclusive and reflective technological future.
